Mitsubishi debuted the Evo V at the 1998 Catalunya Rally, and right out of the box it was very fast. It wasn't much different to the Evo IV, except that it had the solutions to the older car's weaknesses - the main problem was that it was narrow, therefore not as competitive on tarmac. The Evo V was designed to the WRC dimensions, and also, the tricky little soultions began with this car, as the rear suspension was just borderline within the Gr.A rules (suspension travel was increased). All in all, the cars clocked up five wins in less than a season, making it Mitsubishi's most successful car. When 1998 turned into 1999, many of these cars were used again - either as test cars, or with Evo VI bumper, rear wing, and new numberplates, but with the same success.
